LCHF - Low Carb high fat

 

 

 

A LCHF diet means that you eat few carbohydrates and a higher proportion of fat.

Basically, you eat very few sugars and starches, and you can indulge in all the other food, especially fatty ones, and you still lose (a lot) weight AND become HEALTHIER.

 

 

The basics

  • Eat: Meat, fish, eggs, vegetables growing above ground and natural fats.

  • Avoid: Sugar and starchy foods (like bread, pasta, rice, beans and potatoes).

  • You can eat at any time, and as much as you want; no need to count calories or weight your food. 

  • Use natural fats; olive oil, coconut oil, butter, bacon fat.

  • Always select full-fat options for dairy products !

  • You can eat nuts, but I would advise to eat in moderation.

  • Berries are the only fruit you can eat, but in moderation.

  • When you buy food at the store, check that it's not more than 5% carbohydrates.

  • You can drink alcohol or eat dark chocolate once in a while

  • Drink lots of water/coffee/tea

 

What to avoid ?

  • Sugars !! All kind of sugars, including fruits

  • Alcohol, especially beer (beer is like liquid bread)

  • Starch: Bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, French fries, potato chips, porridge, muesli and so on. Wholegrain products are just less bad. Legumes, such as beans and lentils, are high in carbs. Moderate amounts of root vegetables may be OK (unless you’re eating extremely low carb).

  • Margarine: Industrially imitated butter with unnaturally high content of omega-6 fat. Has no health benefits, tastes bad. Statistically linked to asthma, allergies and other inflammatory diseases.

 

 

 

How does LCHF work?

 

We have only eaten these starchy foods for 5 – 10 000 years, since the development of agriculture. We’ve hardly had time to genetically adapt to these processed foods.

In the 80s, the fear of fat gripped the western world. Low-fat products popped up everywhere. But if you eat less fat you need to eat more carbohydrates to feel satiated. And it’s at this time in history that our disastrous epidemics of obesity and diabetes started.

 

So the idea is to eat less sugar and more natural fat, much more. It is important to stop fearing eating fat, as it is not fat that makes us fat, but sugar.

 

It is really important to actually eat enough fat> Up to 70% of your intakes should come from fat, this way your body get to enter the ketogenic mode inwhich it will use the fat and not sugar to make energy.

 

 

My personal opinion

 

I have personnally tried this diet for a few months. And I must say the results are incredible !! First, of course, the weight loss is fast, but the amazing part is all the energy you have and how healthy you feel !

I used to always feel bloated and crash after my meals. On the LCHF diet, you never crash, you always feel energetic ,and all your digestive problems are gone !

It is also an amazing diet to solve conditions like diabetes or blood pressure problems.

 

You will be criticized.. A lot ! People will tell this is BS and it endangers your health. It isn't true. It is actually a healthy diet that you can follow for the rest of your life, and more and more doctors are talking about it.

 

I have stopped though. I found it difficult to manage to have a normal social life and eating LCHF. Especially if like me, you have a boyfriend that deeply believe it is BS and won't support it. So I went back to a normal diet, where I actually eat anything I like, I just watch the quantity, I eat like 2 or 3 times less than I used to and the results are amazing. And I get to share yummy food with my boyfriend and daughter.. :)

 

So what I do now is alternate. I will do a month or so on LCHF, then go back to eating normal but still watching the quantities. It is working for me and I'm sure it'll work for anyone.

What I think about it when I look back

I remember how amazing I felt during that diet. But it was still a diet and I just don't believe in dieting that much.

I went through some hard times and of course gained the weight back. Not that the diet itself failed, but the weight we are carrying comes from deeper issues that we have to solve if we want to reach a healthier weight and stay there. OR work on feeling happy just the way we are, and focus on exercising for the health part.

 

The LCHF is still one of my favorite diet though.
